The Heritage Roofing Family Tree

A Legacy Begins with Albert
Although Albert was not a founder of the current company, his development of a building firm in the early 1970s unknowingly laid the foundations for generations of specialist experience. Based in Burford, the "Gateway to the Cotswolds," Albert’s construction company was later joined by his two sons, including Bryan.
The business initially operated as a general building firm with a strong focus on traditional Cotswold trades, a location and focus that naturally led to a deep specialisation in the unique Cotswold stone roofing industry.
Shane’s Entry into the Trade
The family’s roofing legacy continued in the early 1980s when Shane began labouring on roofs at the age of 16. Working alongside his future brother-in-law, Kevin Edgington, Shane spent several years honing his craft across the Cotswolds.
As he became increasingly skilled and confident, he began working as a roofer in his own right, gaining invaluable experience with various local firms and mastering the technical demands of the region's historic architecture.
Establishing a Specialist Brand
Shane eventually co-founded Heritage Roofing Company with local builder and friend Jason Strong. When Jason later left to pursue his own building firm, Shane took the opportunity to develop the business independently, focusing on his core passion: delivering high-quality stone slate roofs.
Under his leadership, the company’s reputation grew rapidly as they began undertaking prestigious projects at nationally recognised sites of outstanding natural beauty, setting a new standard for craftsmanship in the sector.
Scaling the Business with Suzanne
As the company’s reputation flourished, Shane’s wife, Suzanne, joined as a business partner to manage the administrative and office side of the operations. Together, they oversaw a period of significant expansion, growing the workforce from two employees to approximately twenty.
This growth was reflected in the company’s premises, which evolved from a home-based office and garden storage into a hired yard and, eventually, purpose-built offices tailored to the company’s specialised needs.
Trusted by National Heritage Leaders
During this pivotal period, Heritage Roofing solidified its standing within the conservation and heritage sector. The company became a preferred contractor for highly respected organisations, including the National Trust and several of Oxford’s most prestigious colleges.
Their portfolio grew to include landmark sites such as Duncan House and the William Morris Memorial Hall, further establishing their reputation for specialist knowledge and high-end craftsmanship.
Joe and Sam Join the Family Legacy
The family tradition continued as Shane and Suzanne’s sons, Joe and Sam, joined the company. Both followed in their father’s footsteps by working on roofs throughout the Cotswolds to learn the trade first-hand.
While Sam chose to specialise as a highly skilled lead roofer on the tools—ensuring that traditional methods and high standards are maintained on-site—Joe moved into an operational role to manage the commercial side of the business, including pricing, tendering, and client relationships.
A Leaner, Stronger Future
As Joe and Sam took over the daily running of the business, they introduced modern systems and processes to improve productivity and refine operations. They made strategic decisions to scale back certain overheads, creating a leaner and more commercially resilient business.
Throughout this transition, they continued to value the guidance and experience of Shane and Suzanne, ensuring that the company’s modernisation never came at the expense of its core heritage values.
Combining Technical Skill with Commercial Oversight
Today, the company’s success is driven by the balanced leadership of the two brothers. Joe provides the operational and commercial oversight necessary for large-scale projects and professional liaison with architects and conservation officers, while Sam provides the hands-on technical expertise required for complex heritage work.
This combination of discretion, reliability, and craftsmanship has resulted in a strong reputation for professionalism and a high volume of repeat commissions from prestigious clients.
